People are selling Dettol spray for £5.6k on eBay as cleaning obsessives clear shop shelves

GREEDY sellers are flogging bottles of Dettol for a whopping £5,600 as stockpilers clear supermarket shelves of cleaning products. 

The coronavirus pandemic has seen people panic buy food and cleaning supplies, leaving shops empty of essentials.

But some people are looking to cash in on the crisis, by flogging cleaning products for thousands of pounds online. 

Numerous listings for Dettol have popped up on eBay, with bottles being sold for as much as £5,600, when it usually costs just a few quid. 

The scarcity of supplies has seen 11 people bid on one listing for more than five grand.

While 19 people are bidding on a bottle of Dettol’s antibacterial all-in-one disinfectant spray which is selling for £2,050.

And five people are trying to get their hands on a Dettol antibacterial spray, in lemon breeze, which comes with the price tag of £205.

It’s thought the e-tailer and other sites are trying to clamp down on people profiteering on the pandemic.

An eBay spokesperson said: “EBay does not tolerate sellers exploiting other users and in line with our price gouging policy these items are banned.

“For several weeks we have had filters in place designed to prevent the listing of items at unreasonably inflated prices, and we are continuing to take increasingly aggressive measures to eliminate profiteering on our platform.

“We have introduced Emergency Listing Restrictions on items including but not limited to masks, hand sanitiser, toilet roll and baby formula, and have rolled out a new price gouging reporting functionality, enabling people to report instances of unreasonably priced items in real time.

“We continue to work closely with authorities including Trading Standards, and our international security teams have been working around the clock to remove any unreasonably priced listings. 

“Where sellers are attempting to circumvent our filters, we are taking necessary enforcement action including account suspension,” Tyla reported.
